Sports Medicine

Athletics rank among the most popular free-time activities, which makes associated traumatic and overuse injuries extremely common. In fact, sports-related conditions affect everyone from children taking part in their first sport to pro athletes.

Sports medicine is a diverse medical specialty that focuses on the injuries and illnesses that occur throughout the body from participating in sports and other physically demanding activities. These conditions typically impact the shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle, muscles and ligaments, and require the expertise of specially trained physicians to get people “back in the game” — whether they are “weekend warriors” who have gotten hurt playing pick-up basketball or professional dancers experiencing ankle pain from repetitive use.

At The Center for Orthopedic Care, Dr. David Abrutyn and Dr. Thomas Nordstrom are orthopedic specialists well versed in sports medicine, with ready office access to such advanced technologies as Dexa scan, nerve conduction study, and platelet rich plasma (PRP) to treat many soft-tissue injuries. They exhaust all conservative treatments before considering surgery for their patients.

Dr. Abrutyn is fellowship trained in sports medicine with specialization in all sports injuries and a surgical focus on the shoulder and knee, which includes but is not limited to ACL, cartilage, rotator cuff and labral repair as well as total knee and shoulder replacement surgery. He has extensive experience treating athletes, particularly as team physician for Immaculata High School in Somerville and Sky Blue FC, New Jersey’s team in Women’s Professional Soccer. Dr. Nordstrom is certified in orthopedics with additional qualification (CAQ) in sports medicine in recognition of his expertise in the field.
